Family Business Survey: A Snapshot of the American Family Business Landscape

Earlier this year the Family Enterprise USA released the results of its annual survey. The survey provides valuable insights into the current state of family businesses in the United States. By surveying a diverse range of family business owners and leaders, the survey sheds light on key trends, challenges, and opportunities.

Key Findings from the 2024 Survey:

  • Strong Growth Expectations: A significant majority of family businesses (74%) anticipate growth in the coming year.

  • Job Creation: Family businesses continue to be major employers, with many adding jobs to their payroll. In 2023, 90% of respondents added between 1 and 50 jobs.

  • Economic Impact: Family businesses contribute significantly to the U.S. economy, accounting for a substantial portion of GDP and employment.

  • Succession Planning: Succession planning remains a top priority for family businesses, with a focus on developing the next generation of leaders.

  • Family Governance: Effective family governance is crucial for the long-term success of family businesses. Family councils and constitutions are important tools for maintaining family harmony and ensuring business continuity.

  • Technology Adoption: Family businesses are increasingly adopting technology to improve efficiency and competitiveness. However, some challenges remain in terms of digital transformation.

  • Financial Performance: While many family businesses are experiencing growth, they also face challenges such as rising costs, inflation, and supply chain disruptions.

By understanding the key findings of this survey, family business owners can make informed decisions, adapt to changing market conditions, and position their businesses for long-term success.
