Onboarding the Board: Orienting Independent Directors

Bringing non-family directors onto your board is a major milestone, but their success depends on how well you onboard them. Outside executives often know finance or strategy, but they rarely understand your family’s unique culture or history.

A thorough onboarding process should include:

  • Family Dynamics Orientation: Brief them on generational relationships, values, and long-term vision, not just historical financials.

  •  Facility & Employee Visits: Schedule time for them to walk the floor and experience company culture firsthand.

  •  Executive Shadowing: Pair new directors with next-gen leaders to foster mentorship and mutual trust early on.
