The "Cousins Syndicate": Building Unity in the Third Generation

By the time a family business reaches the third generation (the cousin consortium), the family circle has expanded dramatically. Cousins often grow up in different households, go to different schools, and may not share the same close bond that the sibling generation did. Left unmanaged, this emotional distance can morph into apathy or boardroom gridlock.

To bridge this gap, proactive families are forming a "Cousins Syndicate"—a structured committee specifically for the rising generation of shareholders.

The syndicate doesn't run operations. Instead, its focus is building relationship capital. They organize shared investments outside the core business, coordinate family philanthropic projects, and host casual weekend retreats.

By giving the cousin generation a space to collaborate, make decisions, and manage smaller projects together early on, you ensure that when they eventually inherit the keys to the entire enterprise, they already know how to work as a unified team.
