The "Sabbatical Policy": Preventing Next-Gen Burnout

In high-performing family firms, the pressure on the rising generation can be intense. They often feel they have to work twice as hard as non-family employees to prove they belong. Over time, this leads to a dangerous, quiet crisis: next-gen burnout.

To combat this, forward-thinking family enterprises are implementing a Next-Gen Sabbatical Policy.

This isn't a luxury vacation; it’s a structured, intentional block of time (typically 2 to 3 months) after a specified milestone—such as 5 or 7 years of continuous service. The rules are simple:

  • Complete Disconnection: No checking emails, no hopping on "quick" operational calls, and no shop talk at family dinners.

  • Purpose-Driven Exploration: The time must be spent pursuing a personal passion, completing an intensive educational program, or volunteering for a global cause.

When next-gen leaders step away from the daily grind, they gain fresh perspective, emotional clarity, and a renewed sense of purpose. They return to the business not exhausted, but energized to lead the next chapter.
