Beyond the Boardroom: The Case for a Family Assembly

As a family enterprise grows and moves into the third or fourth generation, the "Board of Directors" becomes increasingly focused on the technicalities of the business. This is necessary for profit, but it often leaves a void in the family side of the equation. This is where a Family Assembly becomes vital.

Unlike a board meeting, the Family Assembly is a forum for all family members, including those not employed by the company. Its purpose is to:

  • Clarify Values: What does the family stand for?

  • Philanthropic Alignment: Where should the family’s charitable giving be directed?

  • Education: Teaching younger members about the responsibilities, not just the perks, of being a shareholder.

By separating "business talk" from "family talk," you protect the sanctity of both. The Board manages the assets, while the Assembly manages the soul of the family.
