Mentoring Growth

How can you lead a mentoring/coaching program that supports individuals as well as corporate growth? What would it look like?

Too few people in business have had the benefit of a mentor. There are some meaningful exceptions, but that is what they are – exceptions. Recently, I was invited to join the board of directors of a sizeable non-profit organization in Southern California. The chief executive office gave a report on the last quarter’s performance, followed by questions from board members. What a pleasant surprise! The executive had been in place a little over a year and summarized the significant changes that were made during that time along with the results that had been building.

After the meeting I chatted with this person, and in response to several of my questions, I learned she had been working with a mentor for several years and gave credit to her mentor for her ability to advance her career. She was enjoying a “success recognition moment!” We often see these kinds of results after we have had the opportunity be mentors and coaches. It makes a huge difference in helping an executive get to the heart of what makes the organization more effective.

We believe senior leadership needs to experience knowledge growth, including mentoring know-how, so they in-turn can mentor the next level. An effective mentoring program, yielding increased knowledge, performance and gratification can accelerate the realization of a high performing organization.
