The Role of the Independent Director

Many family boards consist only of Mom, Dad, and the kids. While this feels safe, it often leads to an "echo chamber." Bringing in an Independent Director, someone with no blood ties and no skin in the family drama, can be a game-changer.

An independent director provides:

·       Objectivity: They can say the things a son might be too afraid to say to a father.

·       Professionalization: They hold the family to a higher standard of corporate governance.

·       Expertise: They bring skills (like M&A or tech) that the family might currently lack.
